Daugavpils, Latvia
Daugavpils is located approximately 230 km south-east of Riga, on the banks of the Daugava River, from which the city gets its name. It is surrounded by a picturesque countryside with plenty of lakes and nature parks.
Daugavpilis is the second largest city in Latvia. The city has a long and rich history. The first historical reference goes back to 1275 when, Dünaburg castle was built („Daugavpils” literally means "Daugava Castle" ).
Between 1561 and 1772, Daugavpils belonged to Poland-Lithuania and was called Dyneburg, capital of Polish-Lithuanian Livonia.
Daugavpils is an important cultural centre in Eastern Latvia. It is a site of two universities - Daugavpils Pedagogical University and local branch of the Riga Technical University.
