The city of Denton with a population of about 120 thousands) is the county seat of Denton County, Texas in the United States. The town is located on the north side of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Dallas is 37 miles to the southeast and Fort Worth is 35 miles to the southwest. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is twenty-eight miles to the south. Established in 1857, Denton is named for John B. Denton, pioneer lawyer, preacher, and soldier, who was killed in a 1841 battle against Keechi Indians. Denton is home to two state universities, the University of North Texas, the largest university in North Texas, and Texas Woman's University, a historically single-sex college completely co-ed since 1994.
