El Salvador
El Salvador is the smallest and the most densely populated country in Central America. It is situated on the Pacific Ocean between Guatemala and Honduras. Though the country is rich in nature attractions: beautiful beaches, pristine forests, active volcanoes and sparkling lakes, it is not as popular tourist destination as its neighbors, and in many parts of the country you can still find peace and quiet.
The exception are some beaches, increasingly popular among amateur surfing, named on the top 3 of best sufing beaches in the world; and the capital city San Salvador - one of the fastest growing capitals in the world, with first-rate universities, museums and art galleries, a vibrant nightlife and live-music scene.
In pre-Columbian time Salvadorian territory was inhabited by various Native Americans: Olmecs, Maya, and Pipils. The step pyramid ruins at Tazumal, San Andrés and Casa Blanca (more than 3000 years old) are not as grand as ruins in other countries, but they have good museums and are worth seeing.
