Mendoza, Argentina
Mendoza is the capital city of Mendoza Province. It is located in the northern-central part of the province, on the eastern side of the Andes, two hours by plane from Buenos Aires. The region of foothills and high plains is the heart and soul of Argentina's wine country, where European settlers introduced the ancient craft of winemaking in the 19th century.
The city is a frequent stopover for climbers on their way to Aconcagua (6962 m, the highest peak in South America) and for adventure travelers interested in mountaineering, hiking, horseback riding, rafting, and other sports - all within reasonable driving distance of downtown Mendoza.
Mendoza was founded in 1561 by Pedro del Castillo who named it Ciudad de Mendoza del Nuevo Valle de La Rioja.
