Academy SJW was founded in 1952, and offers courses in English as a Foreign Language to adult learners from overseas. Academy SJW is Accredited by the British Council, and has been a member of Arels since 1965 - your guarantee of satisfaction.
Academy SJW is located in a pleasant residential area of Inner London, just north of Regent's Park. There are numerous pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops close to the school.
There are three courses at SJW: Maincourse and Summercourse both offer intensive general English language tuition. Examcourse, which has three levels, offers intensive preparation for the Cambridge University FCE, CAE and CPE exams. All SJW School courses offer intensive practice in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Great emphasis is placed on the systematic development of communication skills.
Academy SJW is unique in several respects:
- Class sizes on all courses are very small, with a maximum of 8 students per class on Maincourse and in Cambridge University exam preparation classes. The maximum class size on Summercourse is 10. All Academy SJW courses offer 25 lessons per week, and cost 170 British pounds per week. Each lesson is 50 minutes. The exam entry fee is included in the cost of the Exam course.
- All students accepted onto our 14 week Cambridge exam preparation courses are given an 'Exam Pass Guarantee'. This means that students who attend all classes, study diligently, but fail the exam, may repeat the course at no extra cost.
- The minimum age for enrolment at SJW is high: students under 18 years old are not accepted. Academy SJW is relatively small - with 10 classrooms, and a maximum of 80 students, the atmosphere is always warm, caring and friendly.
Most SJW students are professional, educated people - government employees, teachers, university students, managers and office workers, as well as people working in the tourist and travel industry. The main nationalities of SJW students are: German, Swiss, Italian, Japanese and French. Polish students make up less than 1% of enrolments
SJW teachers are all graduates of British Universities. In addition, they have a minimum of two years' teaching experience, together with the Cambridge University/RSA CELTA teaching qualification or a Master's degree in ELT (English Language Teaching).
Academy SJW has a comfortable Students' Lounge, where tea and coffee are always available. An internet connection can be used free of charge at lunchtimes. For students who would like to do extra homework after school, audio and video tapes, study books and novels can be borrowed free of charge for use in the evenings and at weekends.
Academy SJW offers an exciting and interesting Social Activity Programme, offering events such as Museum, Gallery, Theatre and Cinema visits in the afternoons and evenings, Pub Crawls, Greyhound Racing, ten-pin bowling, visits to TV and radio studios, as well as
weekend excursions to towns outside London. Events which take place inside the school are free. Outside events such as theatre evenings, cinema etc cost from 5 to 10 British pounds.
Homestay accommodation can easily be arranged with local British host-families. A single room with breakfast and dinner every day costs 110 British pounds per week. Alternatively, hotel or apartment accommodation can be organised.
