Why Study at the Queen's School of English?
The School of English is part of the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University, one of Canada's oldest and most prestigious universities. The School has been in continuous operation since 1942, making it one of the longest-established schools of its kind in Canada.
Full-time programs
Students may study full-time in the following programs: 12-Week English for Academic Purposes (EAP), 13-Week Business Internship, or one of our short-term summer programs. The EAP Program features an innovative, integrated skills, content-based curriculum. The short-term programs use a fluency-based curriculum that focuses on developing oral/aural competence in English. Both the EAP Program is offered at levels ranging from Beginner to Continuing Advanced, while the short-term programs are offered at levels, from Beginner to Advanced.
The School has pioneered the creation of a new Business Internship Program, in which students gain classroom and workplace experience, allowing them to develop their English language skills in a professional context.
Part-time courses
We also offer part-time courses, such as Business English, Pronunciation and Conversation, International TESL, and TESL/TEFL (Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language).
Tailored programs
The School will customize a program for a group or institution. Our clients on the tailored programs come from many parts of the world; they are governmental and educational institutions, travel agencies and private groups.
Many institutional clients grant a credit for successful completion of a tailored program. The School will work with the institution to ensure that the necessary documentation for Foreign transfer credit is complete.
Choice of accommodation
The School offers two types of accommodation: University residence and Homestay. Many students prefer to find their own accommodation by using the Queen's International Housing Service.
Student life
All of the School's full-time programs are intensive and focus on integration of students into university life. School of English students have access to all Queen's facilities, including the libraries, the Physical Education Centre, and Student Health Services, among others.
The School organizes a full program of socio-cultural activities that includes films, sports, local and university events. The School also offers optional trips to Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara Falls and other points of interest.
English-only
An important focus of the programs is the requirement that everyone communicate in English at all times. Students sign a pledge to speak English for the duration of their program.
Admission to Queen's University
A significant advantage of the 12-Week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is the English proficiency exam waiver for application to Queen's University. Beginning with applications for the 2008/9 academic year, students are required to achieve a minimum of 80 percent at the Advanced 140 level or a minimum of 75 per cent at the Continuing Advanced 150 level to be considered for the exam waiver. More information can be found on the Queen's School of English website.
