Klagenfurt, (since 2007, Klagenfurt am Wörthersee - Klagenfurt on Lake Wörthersee) is the capital of Corinthia, the seat of the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church and the University of Alpe-Adria. The city is picturesquely located amidst wooded hills and mountains above Lake Wörthersee and the Glan River. The old legend says that the city was founded after a pair of courageous people killed the winged dragon "Lindwurm" living on the shores of the lake. Although he fed mainly on virgins, he did not despise the fat bull tied with a solid chain to the mighty tower. This feat commemorates the 9-ton Renaissance monument standing in the city center.

In fact, Klagenfurt was founded in the 12th century by the Spanish prince Herman at the intersection of important trade routes. However, only his son Bernhard von Spanheim gave the town a character. The city's greatest development took place in the 16th century. With the development of the railways in the second half of the nineteenth century, there was another rapid economic development of the city, which soon became a significant center of the region. The main tourist attraction of Klagenfurt is the Old Town with Alter Platz (Old Square) and Renaissance tenement houses with characteristic arcades; dating from 1593, a fountain, a baroque cathedral founded by Protestant landowners of Corinthia and the buildings of the Viktring Abbey.
