Greek language

The Greek language is the Hellenic language of the Indo-European language family. It's a language of the Greeks, native to the southern Balkans, with the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries of written records. Since the term "Greek" may refer to the various stages of the Greek language, in order to define the contemporary Greek language, the term "Modern Greek language" is in use. During Classical Antiquity Greek was a widely spoken lingua franca in the Mediterranean world and beyond. Many modern languages have adopted words from Greek, especially in the field of scientific terminology. Greek is also used in the process of new word production in modern languages. To write the Greek language the Greek alphabet is used. Modern Greek is spoken by approximately 15 million people. It is the official language of Greece and Cyprus. It's officially recognized as a minority language in parts of Italy and Albania, as well as in Armenia and Ukraine. Greek is also spoken in Greek diaspora communities in numerous parts of the world. It's one of the official languages of the European Union.
