Spanish language

Spanish language (Español or Castellano) is a Romance language in the Ibero-Romance group of Indo-European family of languages. Like all other Romance languages (Italian, Portuguese, French, Romanian and Catalan), Spanish evolved from Vulgar Latin (common Latin) that had been introduced to the Iberian Peninsula by Romans. Contemporary Spanish (spoken both in Spain and Latin America) originate from the medieval Castilian language. The term "Castilian language (in Spanish: castellano) operates interchangeably with the term" Spanish ". 450 - 500 million people around the world use Spanish as their mother tongue, among them about 100 million speak it as a second language. 18 million (some sources say up to 46 million) of students worldwide learn Spanish as a foreign language . Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in terms of native speakers, and third most spoken language by total number of speakers (after Chinese, and English).Spanish is also as the third most commonly used language on the Internet (after English and Chinese). By some reliable estimates in 2050, about 10% of the Earth population will speak Spanish as their mother or second language and the United States will be the largest country of Spanish speaking residents. Spanish is spoken in 20 different countries worldwide. Spanish as an official language: Africa: Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla (Spanish territories) and Equatorial Guinea, America: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the State of New Mexico, U.S. (along with English), Europe: Spain, Oceania: Easter Island (Chile territory). Spanish is also spoken by Spanish communities in other countries: Brazil, Andorra (though Catalan is the official language), Netherlands Antilles, Belize, Philippines (official language until 1977), Israel, Canada, Morocco, United States (Arizona, Florida, California, Nevada, New York, Texas), Trinidad and Tobago, Gibraltar (though English is the official language) and Western Sahara. Spanish is one of the official languages of the United Nations, UNESCO, European Union, the African Union, the Organization of American States and the Mercosur (Southern Common Market).
